Performative authenticity, anyone?

There's such a deep yearning for authentic expression and connection these days. So why is it that sometimes we recoil from what's being presented to us as authentic and vulnerable? What's in the energy that somehow doesn't feel right? This clip explores the phenomena of performative authenticity and vulnerability, especially in the online marketing and influencer space, and how people instinctively resist its energy, while at the same time craving truer connection.  It can be a bit confusing and uncomfortable...

Instead, be yourself. No one needs to try harder to more of themselves. Relax into who you are and how you express yourself because your life will be much better that way. Do that for its own sake, and not because you're to manipulate a certain reaction from other people.

About the Podcast

All Things Human with Adele Wang
How power works, in people and in machines.
How power works, in people and in machines. Especially in this time of massive and hyper-rapid change.

Adele Wang watches how people behave, in organizations and in ordinary life, and says the part most people leave out.

Some episodes are about work. Who decides, who gets blamed, what happens when nobody quite owns a decision. Some are about relationships. Why you know your neighbor's dog's name and not theirs. What we want from each other and what we're willing to admit we want.

The through line is the same either way. What's really going on underneath the thing everyone agrees to say.
